After spending a month in Brazil doing business and enjoying some vacation I am now more than ever convinced that to be successful there you need to be flexible and spontaneous. One can have the best market entry strategy, the best strategic planning in place and the best products and/or services but if you don’t know how to deal with the Brazilian business culture, all of the above don’t mean a thing. I say this from experience.
Even though I am Brazilian I had to deal with some interesting situations when doing business there. After living and working in the U.S. for 14 years I have become very focused, goal-oriented, and have a “get it done” mentality that many times doesn’t translate well in Brazil. Being in Brazil for a long period of time gave me a chance to go back to my roots and realize that it’s not all about the bottom line… it’s about how you get there. Every meeting I had took a different course than what I had expected and every encounter turned into an event. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it! Last week I had a meeting at 10am that was supposed to last an hour. Well, I was only able to leave after 1:30pm. What’s the lesson here? Do not plan meetings back-to-back. You never know if the meeting will turn into a lunch where you will be able to meet other partners and clients or simply deepen the relationship you already have.
