New digit added to mobile phones in SP

Brazil's National Telecom Agency (ANATEL) announced a change in the numbering plan in the Sao Paulo Metro region (area code 11).

Starting next week, mobile telephone numbers will be added digit 9 in front of the current eight digit local number.

According to the information released at Jornal Nacional last night (Brazilian news program), the change will allow the creation of 90 million new mobile telephone numbers when the city was close to reach its capacity.

Next time you dial Sao Paulo mobile phones in the Metro area from the US do not forget to add the digit 9 after the two digit area code (11) and before the eight digit local number. You should dial something like: +1 55 11 9 + eight digit local number.
